Hitch (2005)

This is like Cyrano de Bergerac with a twist of lemon. Instead of Cyrano helping a man "woo" a woman he secretly loves, Hitch changes it so that it's his job to help men. As a "dating consultant", he gives men who lack confidence the boost that they need. However the twist comes when Hitch meets his match in a woman, who could be the anti-Hitch, since she could be the patron saint of broken-hearted women.

Their paths cross when they meet at a bar and Hitch's charm intrigues her. The plot thickens when Hitch is helping a bumbling accountant named Albert (Kevin James) get the girl of his dreams, who happens to be a celebrity that Sara (Eva Mendes) is writing about. You know that trouble is around the corner because Sara is going to find out that Hitch, her boyfriend, is also, Hitch, the date doctor! Its fairly easy to guess what happens next.

Despite the predictability of Hitch, its still an entertaining movie. I used to love watching the latest Will Smith summer blockbuster when he fought aliens or robots. You know, the Will Smith who's main expressions were "hell naw!" and "Welcome to Earf!" I guess I lost interest around the time this was in theaters but I wish I hadn't. Will Smith shows off the same charm he had on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Kevin James is great, too, like when he is specifically told not to do something yet does it anyways, like dancing. The Speed Dating scene is probably the highlight, which turned from comical into truthful. Hitch explains why he does what he does, yet in the end we all realize its what's inside ourselves. Romantic comedies all seem to start the same: boy meets girl, loses girl, gets her back. I liked Hitch because of the way it gets from Point A to Point B.

  1. I really enjoyed this one too. This is one of those rom-coms where I feel like the cast brought the material to another level as Smith and James were both great.
