Favorite Movies of 2011

Here is another reposted list from Facebook.

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Its weird that this ranked as my top movie of the year and it was one I didn't even want to see! I am a fan of the original movie and its sequels and I can tell that the filmmakers were too. There were many references to the previous movies, like the names of characters and the famous lines were repeated. But more than just referencing the older movies, "Rise" tells its own story, which is how the apes become intelligent and why humans will eventually become enslaved to them.

2. Captain America
This is the last of the "intro" stories before next summer's blockbuster, The Avengers, and I feel that it's also the best of them. That's not to say Iron Man and Thor are not great movies but what sets "Cap" apart from the rest is because it takes advantage of its entire cast. Chris Evans is a very convincing Steve Rogers and also shines as Captain America; Hugo Weaving is excellently hammy as The Red Skull; Tommy Lee Jones looks like he had a lot of fun as Col. Phillips; and I'm sure all of the bad guys had fun with their German accents.

3. Rango
Much like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rango is another movie with amazing special effects. All of the desert creatures and critters look extremely life-like, while still having a cartoonish appearance. You can see so much detail in their fur or their scales. Its very impressive work. Besides looking spectacular, Rango is also a fun spin on the Western genre of films. I think its a film that both kids and adults would find funny because it doesn't spend too much time trying to please one over the other.

4. Drive
This might be the most violent movie released this year, yet in Drive the violence actually makes sense. It doesn't just have its lead character beating people up because its "fun." The movie takes it time to introduce the characters in the story, then we get to the violence later as a pay-off. There's also a neat soundtrack and slick photography. The scenes filmed at night appear to be dark and colorful at the same time.

5. The Muppets
This is another movie that was made for both kids and adults to enjoy. Kids might enjoy the songs or the fart shoes or "Muppet Man", while the adults will like cameos from Dave Grohl and Jack Black. Or they'll just like the fact that its a good Muppets movie, without the need to put them in outer space.

6. Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows
7. Cars 2
8. Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol
9. X-Men: First Class
10. Thor

2011 was the first year I really sat down and wrote full reviews, rather than just a few snarky sentences on Facebook. I saw a lot of movies last year and was really impressed with the overall quality of movies. While 2010 had more "stand-out" blockbusters and such, 2011 was more consistent.
