The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Lionsgate
This movie has been on the shelf for over two years but I find it a bit ironic that Cabin in the Woods was finally released at the same time of another movie. That other movie is The Hunger Games. Though they are very different movies, “Cabin” shares a similar theme with The Hunger Games, which has young adults in a game of survival. You could even call “Cabin” the “Horror Games.”

Cabin in the Woods probably won’t be a movie for everyone, though I wish that statement wasn’t true. It’s such a rewarding horror movie, which is almost a lost art these days. Most horror movies go for cheap jump scares; those moments where someone in the movie is caught off guard and you jump in your seat because they are startled. “Cabin” actually sets up those moments but then doesn’t do anything. It’s far more creative of a movie that it doesn’t need to toy with cheap tricks like that.

On the surface it may seem like Cabin in the Woods is mocking horror movies. Of course people traveling to a cabin in a desolate area are in trouble. We expect that. Instead what “Cabin” does is it pays tribute to movies that have come before. I really would be spoiling the fun if I said anymore than this. Just see it. Cabin in the Woods almost didn’t see the light of day, after being a victim of issues by the studio that filmed it, then was considered for a 3D post-production conversion. That would’ve completely ruined the movie. So I must thank Lionsgate for finally rescuing and releasing this movie to theaters.
