Fright Night (2011)
Dreamworks |
It seems that lately vampires in movies are too “romantic”
and there isn’t enough bloodshed. If you’re hungry for that, then Fright Night
will satisfy your cravings! Jerry (excellent portrayed by Colin Farrell) isn’t
a nice vampire that sparkles in sunlight, instead he’s a nasty vampire that
wants to drain the blood of everyone that lives in an isolated subdivision in
the middle of the desert. Seems like a nice location to feed and go unnoticed.
That is until Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) and his pal Ed (Christopher
Mintz-Plasse aka “Mc Lovin”) discover Jerry’s secret after a classmate goes
missing.
Even though Fright Night is a remake of a film from 1985, I
felt it improves upon the original. This time Charley isn’t a big whiner and
Anton Yelchin adds “coolness” to the character that was lacking before. This
version of Jerry may not be suave but he isn’t supposed to be and he even warns
Charley that “there are bad people out there.” The final main character is
Peter Vincent (played by David Tennant) and instead of being an aging actor,
he’s more like “Russell Brand: Vampire Slayer.” If you haven’t seen the
original, that’s fine. It works great on its own as a grim vampire movie with a
lot of humor mixed in. And who better to write the script than a former
producer from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. For those that are familiar with Fright
Night, it references the original and even adds more depth to characters like
Ed and Peter Vincent. The new Fright Night is fun and frightening, so gather
your friends and have a bloody good time at the movies!
