"The Lord of War and Thunder"

Well, the "idiotic criminal" formula takes a backseat in this episode, but in return they pack in more plot than the last three episodes combined. Raylan's much talked about father, played by Raymond J. Barry, finally makes an appearance on the show and its exactly what we expect out of him. I'm familiar with Raymond J. Barry because he made an appearance or two on The X-Files as a Senator but this is nothing like that role. Arlo Givens is an onry drunk who lacks the finesse his son has, though they do seem to have a lot in common.

The back and forth smashings with baseball bats from Arlo and Perkins, a man renting property from him, isn't very interesting and it just seems like an excuse to get Arlo into the series. It worked, because I liked seeing Raylan interact with his father. It seems as if Raylan could've become just like his old man if it weren't for getting out of Harlan County, and eventually becoming a Marshal.

The idiotic criminal subplot starts with Raylan on a stake-out and then turns into Raylan as an undercover gardener, which is funny considering that two episodes ago another criminal named Curtis claimed he was fond of "pruning." The gardening work got him closer to a suspect and also closer to a bullet, but his finesse got him out of the situation. It just shows how much depth the character has and how good Timothy Olyphant is already getting at playing him, that he can wink through some moments and also treat the serious moments with substance. Though I think as a viewer I'm supposed to be more interested in the storylines involving Raylan and Ava, and now Raylan and his father, I'm still more interested in seeing Raylan capture these knuckle-head criminals. I should really soak up the moments now, since I know the series isn't long for dedicating full episodes to these cases.

As good as Olyphant is, Walton Goggins' Boyd Crowder is still my favorite character, though it would be nice to see him again. Another character who's rarely been seen or heard from since the Pilot is Raylan's ex-wife, Winona. She made a brief appearance and removed herself from Raylan's case involving his shooting of Boyd Crowder due to a conflict of interest. I have a feeling those two eventually get back together at some point on the series, though its probably a long-shot and I shouldn't hold my breath.
