"Long In The Tooth"

Aired April 6, 2010

This episode plays with the "idiot criminal" formula of the last couple of episodes and it's also a personal episode for Raylan since it's tied to his past. Just like in "Riverbrook", Raylan is chasing after a criminal, except this criminal is a man who Raylan let slip away years ago after taking him into custody. Alan Ruck (famous for roles in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Spin City) plays a dentist named "Rollie" who isn't as idiotic as past criminals on Justified but he does provide more humor than they did. I especially liked his explanation for why he became a dentist, which was inspired by the Christmas special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

The "idiots" in this episode are actually guys sent by the mob to track down Rollie after his story makes news headlines. I liked that plot development because everybody seems to know about Raylan's shooting down in Miami, so it makes sense that the mob wouldn't forgive him for taking out one of their own. Also, while not really playing an idiot criminal, I liked Clarence Williams III's appearance as a snarky old man who calls out Rollie for stealing a car. After swapping cars with Rollie, he's pulled over and harasses the cops who stopped him and Raylan, too. It seems like the humor was really turned up to eleven for this episode and it works wonderfully.

Not only does this series satisfy my tastes for humor, it also works just as well with heart-felt moments. Raylan shows a softer side when bonding with his partner and also Rollie has a "heroic" moment when he defends his secretary-turned-getaway partner. He's not such a bad guy, he was just caught up in a bad situation, so it sucks but isn't surprising when he doesn't survive this hour of tv. Even though the idiot mob men met their end with a bullet from Raylan, I'm sure he'll cross paths again with more mob goons and it won't be in a comedic episode like this one.
