"Blowback"

Honestly, I don't like to watch many modern comedies of the last decade. They don't interest me too much because they go for raunchy gags or they prefer foul language over witty dialogue. I've found that my style of humor is best displayed in drama television shows, like The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Homicide: Life on the Street, and now Justified. The witty dialogue and quirky situations are right up my alley. This episode, "Blowback", had an awesome blend of humor and plot developments which makes it an easy choice for my favorite episode of the first season.

The plot developments involve Raylan's ex-wife discovering a shady intruder in her house, who acts like a home security specialist but seems more than meets the eye, and Bo Crowder being united with his son Boyd on the other side of the prison's barbed wire fence. The opening scene with Bo Crowder, Raylan, and Ava is creepy and I like the casting choice of M.C. Gainey as Bo, who is a hoss of a man, like they'd say in professional wrestling.

The plot-of-the-week is a hostage situation within the Marshal Service office, which is also what tv experts refer to as a "bottle episode since it takes place in one location. Quite a few tv shows do an episode like this, mostly in their first season or it's done as a way to keep a series under budget since it doesn't use many locations. I really like this one because Raylan bonds with this week's criminal over fried chicken and alcohol. Raylan's cool attitude is on full display here when he talks the guy into eating chicken and made calling in a SWAT team meaningless.

Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder again outshined the rest of the cast when he skipped into the loving arms of his father upon his release from prison. I'm sure Bo will be up to no good, especially since he's already at odds with Raylan, so it seems likely it'll drive a wedge between father and son. Now we'll know for sure if Boyd's change of heart and new path in life is legit.
