This Is The End (2013)

Columbia Pictures
I didn’t leave this movie thinking it was the best comedy ever, nor that it was a pile of garbage, or
even my typical “meh” assessment, instead I really want to smoke pot. It makes sense too,
because if the world is going to hell, you might as well stick with your buddies and pass around a
joint. This Is The End makes smoking pot with your buddies look like the greatest adventure since Raiders of the Lost Ark. There’s no doubt you would need to be high to create a movie like this. So if it was written while people were high, acted while they were high, and possibly the director was high too, then the viewer should be high as well.

Despite not being high, I did laugh quite a bit at this movie. It was a creative move to have the actors
play themselves, though they’re likely exaggerated versions. The highlight was James Franco, who is
eccentric and plays the hell out of it, as he rations his food out to his pals, records a video confessional, makes a fake sequel to The Pineapple Express, collects odd artwork, and even wears a sleep mask to bed. Jonah Hill’s politeness is comical; Michael Cera is NOT aging well at all, in fact his face resembles a baby bird's beak; Seth Rogen is his usual, lovable, slacker self; and Danny McBride is just an inconsiderate ass. Other actors and comedians make cameos as themselves at a party at Franco’s house, including Aziz Ansari, Kevin Hart, and Jason Segel.

What nearly ruined a fun movie were the endless amounts of jizz and dick jokes, even a rape scene.
This movie had such a fun concept that it should be a goldmine for humor, except they couldn’t rise
above the same dick jokes that plague every modern comedy. I don’t recall comedies from twenty
years ago being like this; about the most profane scenario was Jeff Daniels’ shit symphony in Dumb
and Dumber,
so it’s only been a trend of this past decade. And when Axel Foley stuck a banana in a
tail pipe in Beverly Hills Cop, it wasn’t slang for sticking it where the sun doesn’t shine. I’m not saying movies have to be squeaky clean, but if you’re going to think outside of the box for movie plots, maybe you should come up with creative jokes to match.
